Course overview

The Prolonged Field Care Mountain Rescue Immersion Experience is a two-day practical training event designed to place medics and pre-hospital care providers into realistic mountain rescue and remote casualty care scenarios.

Set in Llanberis, Wales, this immersive experience gives participants the opportunity to learn essential mountain rescue skills and then apply them during challenging casualty management scenarios in harsh outdoor environments.

Unlike standard classroom or short scenario-based training, this experience is designed to test how casualty care changes when help is delayed, conditions are difficult, resources are limited and the patient needs to be managed over an extended period of time.

Participants will be involved in locating, treating, extricating and managing casualties, including caring for patients throughout the night.

Why attend?

Providing medical care in remote and mountain environments is very different from delivering care in controlled or easily accessible settings.

Casualties may be cold, wet, injured, inaccessible, difficult to move and require care for many hours before definitive help is available. Teams must manage clinical priorities, environmental exposure, fatigue, communication, equipment limitations and difficult terrain while maintaining patient safety.

This immersion experience is designed to give participants realistic exposure to these challenges in a safe, structured and professionally supported environment.

It is ideal for those who want to move beyond short training scenarios and experience the physical, clinical and human factors involved in prolonged field care and mountain rescue.

What to expect

Over the two days, participants will learn and practise key mountain rescue and remote casualty care skills before putting them into practice during realistic scenarios.

You should expect to be outside, active and involved in challenging casualty management situations. The experience will include live casualty scenarios, realistic injury simulation and prolonged patient care problems that continue beyond the usual short training window.

Participants will be required to manage casualties in harsh environments, support extrication and continue care through the night.

Scenarios may include:

  • Remote casualty assessment

  • Mountain rescue skills

  • Casualty packaging and protection from the environment

  • Prolonged field care decision-making

  • Working with limited equipment and resources

  • Managing deterioration over time

  • Casualty movement and extrication

  • Team communication in remote environments

  • Managing fatigue, weather and difficult terrain

  • Overnight casualty care

  • Handover and continued care planning
